SUMMARY
You think you know Tuscany? Whilst the Northern Tuscany of Pisa, Florence, Siena and Chianti is well travelled there is a large part of Southern Tuscany undiscovered and untouched by most tourists. We will take you to an idyllic medieval village for their annual harvest festival in late October. You will enjoy the delights of the celebration of local wine and food and culture that is the festival as well as being shown the local region. You will in good hands, your guide SL.IT founder, and former award-winning chef and restauranteur Jason Hartley has been visiting this region for twenty years.

ITINERARY
The following is an indication of the agenda, the weather, people's availability and other factors always play a role so the actual agenda may vary. Also, note that Jason loves surprises so not everything is included below.

Wednesday
  • You can arrive anytime from 14:00-17:00 (2-5pm). We will check you into your tiny home in the village. The village's secret power is its remoteness so do bear in mind there is some travel required please check your connections see the note at the end of the itinerary for more information.
  • We will go to a local trattoria in a nearby village for dinner as a gentle introduction and to get to know your fellow travellers with some complementary local wine on us.

Thursday
  • We will have set you up with basics for breakfast in your accommodation (bread, eggs, yoghurt, fruit, cheese).
  • You'll meet Jason in the village cafe for coffee and then he'll take you down towards the coast and the regional capital Grosseto. Grosseto is a lovely town and also has beaches (although this time of year despite having good weather is probably not beach time). You'll have the choice to join Jason for a short walking tour or just take some time for yourself. Jason will provide you recommendations for where you could go for lunch in the town.
  • After lunch we'll head back towards the village stopping of a small micro vineyard, a place not only that produces beautiful wine but also great inspiration. Jason will explain more on the day. We will enjoy a full tasting and you will be able to buy wine on the day.
  • FYI SLIT is also a registered wine importer to the UK so we can arrange transport the wines should you want to buy more than you can take back in person.
  • We have a table booked for dinner back in the village at the local Osteria should you want to join, with a couple of glasses of complementary wine so you can relax and enjoy a very short walk home.

Friday
  • After a late breakfast and coffee we will head out to a local cheesemaker who makes the most wonderful cheeses with their small herd of indigenous cattle. Jason will have a lunch prepared for you after the tasting.
  • After lunch, you'll join Jason and head to the local village of Roccalbegna. You will have some time to explore before meeting back up at a local micro-brewer and maker of natural wines (a very new concept to Tuscany.) He originates from one of Tuscanies ancient noble families but now makes his humble home here and makes fascinating, interesting beers and wines.
  • Jason will provide snacks to enjoy with your drinks.
  • After we will head back to the village where it is the first evening of festa! The village comes alive as several cantina's (cellers) are cleared into makeshift bars. Friday is the locals night, a little quiter and more intimate and a chance to get to know some of the characters of the village.
  • Jason will provide you some options for your for dinner which can be booked prior to your arrival.

Saturday
  • There will be no early mornings on this trip. You will have a leisurely start to the day to relax.
  • Late morning we will head to a local agriturismo who produce a range of wines and products where we will enjoy a tasting and lunch.
  • You'll then have the afternoon to yourselves to relax before the evening comes around and the festa's main evening comes alive with chestnuts roasted over an open fire, live music (be warned it's not Oasis but it is in keeping with the local culture) and people from the surrounding region flood into the village for the evening.
  • On Saturday and Sunday an open kitchen is created created in the village square offering classical simple local dishes. You will then be able to relax, enjoy and immerse yourself in the evening.

Sunday
  • Sunday is all yours to relax.
  • Jason can provide a range of recommendations for exploring the local region or you can just kick back in the village take in the views and relax.
  • Sunday afternoon is the last day of the festa. The village comes alive again in the afternoon with music, visitors and traditional tombola (bingo) before more merriment and possibly a fireworks display to bring the festivities to a close (apart from some locals who will sing the evening away in one of the cantina's)
Monday
With a heavy heart and most likely a heavy head it's check-out.
